There is no principal who wakes up in the morning and says, "I hope the teachers hate me today."
And yet, most teachers do not trust their school administration.
So what's the problem? Why is there so much animosity, distrust and lack of respect for school leaders?
And is there anything you can do to fix this situation?
The Principal's Academy
The Principal's Academy is a FREE newsletter you can join that will give you the opportunity to ask any question you might have about school leadership or talk about whatever school obstacle you might be facing.
When you sign up for the Principal's Academy newsletter, there are two editions per week. The first edition allows you to ask your questions. This edition comes out every single week and is a great opportunity to let the community know what issues, questions or dilemmas you are facing.
And then the second edition will come out later in the week, where Doc Schwartz, aka "The School Doc" will answer some of the questions school leaders raised in the first edition.
If you feel isolated and alone as a school leader, the Principal's Academy newsletter will connect you to school leaders across the country, in addition to providing you with the most current and 21st century solutions for your school.
Earn the Respect You Deserve
Here's the good news.
Teachers want to respect you and want to respect all school administrators.
The reason teachers feel a certain way about their administration is due to a lack of good communication and follow through.
This is why all principals need to become expert teaching coaches. When you know everything that a teacher should and should not do, not based on your "beliefs" but based on real 21st century academic research - then your teachers will begin to trust your leadership and guidance.
Far too often, principals are "guessing" what a teacher should do based on what they might have observed or their own personal experiences.
The truth is that just because a specific strategy may have worked for one teacher or with a specific group of students does not automatically mean its 100% effective. And far too often, principals paint themselves into a corner when they make suggestions that fail.
What you need to realize is that a lot of best practices and teaching strategies will fail at some point. When you become an expert teacher coach, you begin to realize that your teachers need a huge toolbox of strategies to choose from.
In other words, if one strategy doesn't work - the teacher can go back into their toolbox and pick a different strategy and see if that works better.
The key is to make sure that every single teacher in your school has a lot of strategies in their teaching toolbox.
