How Do I Get Buy-In?

by Doc Schwartz, M.Ed. | May 6, 2024 | Blog

You have ideas. You have goals. And you want to turn your school performance around.

But here's the problem.

You can't achieve your vision on your own.

In fact, you need teacher "buy-in" to make any new program or initiative to work.

But how do you get buy-in?

The Principal's Academy

The Principal's Academy is a FREE newsletter you can join that will give you the opportunity to ask any question you might have about school leadership or talk about whatever school obstacle you might be facing.

When you sign up for the Principal's Academy newsletter, there are two editions per week. The first edition allows you to ask your questions. This edition comes out every single week and this is a great opportunity to let the community know what issues, questions or dilemmas you are facing.

And then the second edition will come out later in the week, where Doc Schwartz, aka "The School Doc" will answer some of the questions school leaders raised in the first edition.

If you feel isolated and alone as a school leader, the Principal's Academy newsletter will connect you to school leaders across the country, in addition to providing you with the most current and 21st century solutions for your school.

Building Buy-In

Here's the truth.

Teachers want to work in a school they believe in.

The trouble is that most school leaders undermine the "purpose" of the school. And here's the worst part - those school leaders break the school promise by accident. Therefore, school leaders don't even realize when they create animosity with staff members.

So here's what you should do if you want to build a culture of "buy-in."

The 10 Things You Should Do to Create Buy-In

The main reason that teachers resist change so much is simply because school leaders keep teachers in the dark, spring news ideas on them spur of the moment and never provide half as much support and help as they think.

Therefore, if you want to create a culture of "buy-in" then you need o do these 10 things:

1.  Develop a Clear School Vision and Purpose
2. Share that School Vision and Purpose with the Teachers
3. Spend time listening to teacher questions about the School Vision and Purpose
4. Answer teacher questions related to the School Vision and Purpose
5. Build a team environment in your school
6. Provide all teachers an opportunity to choose what role they want to play in your school, based on the School Vision and Purpose
7. Outline for each teacher their role and responsibilities
8. Announce to the entire school--what each staff member's role is on the team (including yours)
9. Develop procedures and best practices to ensure that every team member follows through on their role and responsibilities
10. Praise and acknowledge team members who do a good job.

TAKE THE QUIZ

Leaf Academy created an easy 10 Question Quiz to determine if you have a positive school classroom or not. This 2-minute quiz should be filled out by your teachers - and when they are done, ask them to screenshot their score
