Yes, you. If you have less than five (5) years experience or you are a teacher struggling to meet the "highly effective" rating on the observation, you are in career trouble. This one metric will prevent you from getting tenure, merit pay, bonuses and other district incentives. This is the line of demarcation.
Every Teacher must reach it -- otherwise they should start to consider doing something else with their career. It's unfortunate that teachers are measured in this archaic and irrelevant manner, but this is how the K-12 system works. And teachers have to get on board, or GET OUT!!
If you are frustrated with the K-12 System, you are not alone! If you are overwhelmed with the amount of research and effort it takes to reach "highly effective", you are not alone! And if you are tired because you have spent the last six months working 10-12 hour days and you still can't reach that rating -- you are not alone!
Before today, you would be completely on your own. That's what the K-12 system expects. Our nation refuses to give teachers any real help or support. It's all about applying the maximum amount of pressure on the most "necessary" workers in the country. Without teachers, the country does not run. "Teachers are the warriors of democracy," D.Scott Schwartz, M.Ed. said to a group of educators in 2017 when asked if teachers are essential to our nation.
But the K-12 system is not designed to be on the teacher's side. That's not fair.
But what if that could change? What if there was a way to create a system that cared about the teacher, their career path, growth and advancement? What if there was a community that supported the teacher and provided the teacher with communication, feedback and career coaching?
