Over 20 Years of Expert Experience
You might not have heard of "The School Doc" before, but after this summer, you will NEVER forget him.
"The School Doc" has been diagnosing problems for the last 20 years. One of the big problems he diagnosed was how old and outdated the school system really was.
"The School Doc" not only has been doing research, he is also a former teacher, principal and school superintendent. What he discovered in his research was that 21st century learners needed a 21st century curriculum.

A 21st Century Success Story
Would you like to hear a story about how someone used these five 21st century skills to improve their life??
This may be the 1st Annual 2023 Summer Program from Leaf Academy, but "The School Doc" has been teaching 21st century skills for over a decade. If you recall earlier in his bio, we mentioned that "The School Doc" was one of the first school superintendents in America to adopt a 21st century skills curriculum for the K12 district program he ran in NJ.
Wait till you hear this story about one of his former students and how he used 21st century skills to follow his dreams.
Starting from Nothing
Having an "EDGE" with 21st Century Skills
To fully appreciate how incredible this story is, let's start at this former student's job. It's a typical day, just like every other. What you need to know is that this former student didn't come from money, therefore college was never an option. So as he went through high school, he knew that he had to find a career that didn't require a college degree.
So he chose the car industry. "The School Doc's" former student was a smart kid, he finished high school with all A's and B's on his report card and went to get his auto-mechanics certificate after graduation. As an entry-level auto-mechanic at a service station, he was making around $20 an hour.
So far nothing unusual, correct?
But this is where his story stars to take a different turn.
One day while at work, a customer walked in to pick up his car after a routine oil-change. While the customer was paying, they began to complain a lot about how long it takes to get an oil-change and how much they hated doing it every 3,000 miles. As the customer continued to complain, the former student could see the customer getting visibly more agitated.
What would you do in that situation?
Would you?
a) ignore the customer
b) politely nod at the customer
c) engage with the customer
d) get the manager
Here's what "The School Doc's" former student did. Option C. Yes, he engaged with the customer. And if you're wondering why he chose that option, it's because he learned the six fundamental steps of leadership in high school and step #5 of leadership is how to listen to people.
Meanwhile this customer is ranting at this point and getting very angry. But as the customer is having difficulty keeping calm, the former student was doing calculations in his head. Now, you might be asking what type of calculations? Was the customer throwing out numbers?
The answer is no, this former student was doing problem solving calculations in his head. That's because he learned the Problem Solving 2-step in high school, so when he was listening to all the problems the customer kept bringing up, he was doing problem solving calculations in his head.
As you can imagine, the customer felt heard. Who else listens to someone ranting in today's society??
When was the last time you bought something or went to a business and people took you seriously? The truth is that customer service is dead in 2023.
But the former student wasn't done yet. He had used his 21st century leadership skills, then used his 21st century problem solving skills, but now he was about to use his 21st century sales skills. When the customer ran out of things to say, the former student asked a follow up sales question:
"How much extra would you pay if we could do an on-site oil change, so you don't waste your afternoon?"
Did you catch everything that just happened?
INSTANT REPLAY
- The Fundamentals of Leadership Skills: He listened to the customer
- The Fundamentals of Problem Solving Skills: He offered a solution
- The Fundamentals of Sales Skills: He found out if the customer would pay for the solution
Now why is any of this information important??
First, let's go back to the initial interaction. How would you react if a customer walked in to your place of work acting aggressive and complaining at you?? Would you choose Option C? Or would you try and pass the customer off to your manager or try and get them out of your workplace as soon as possible?
What you may not realize is that this former student was never trained to talk to customers. He never received sales training at the service station. The only thing they trained him how to do was use the cash register. He learned how to do his job at the auto-mechanics school.
Isn't that how most jobs work?? When you get hired, they don't train you to do anything?? They just expect you to know how to do everything or learn how?? Correct?
This former student was an entry-level employee. He was making $20 an hour. There was zero expectation for him to talk to the customers. In fact, if the manager was in the room, he might have stopped this former student from going as far as he did.
But wait, because this is only the beginning of the story...
Overcoming the Invisible Wall
to Pursue the "American Dream!"
When the customer left the service station, this former student realized he had a golden opportunity to make some extra money. When he asked the customer how much extra he would pay for on-site oil change, he said $20 to $30.
What do you think? Would you pay an extra $20 to not have to deal with bringing your car in for service?
At this point, the former student hasn't taken a full step ahead of you yet. Right now, he just has an "idea" that he can run with. But remember, this former student received a 21st century skills education. He didn't spend 4 years in the same classrooms as you.
