Better Curriculum

Your school's curriculum is all about "what" you teach kids in class. So the question people need to ask is, "am I teaching kids what they need to know or just what I want them to know?"

Unfortunately, most schools are using a curriculum that was written 100 years ago, and the only reason they keep using it is because that's what everyone else is doing. Therefore, teachers and principals keep thinking, "If we don't use this curriculum, then we're out of step with everyone else and we're not doing what we're supposed to be doing."

But this is wrong. The truth is your school's curriculum is not supposed to teach kids what everyone else is learning. Your curriculum is supposed to teach kids only what they "need" to know, in order for them to be successful in the future. So ask yourself, does your current curriculum teach kids what they "need" to know or just what everyone else is learning?

It's impossible to run a great school without great teachers. If you don't come to that conclusion first, then it will be impossible for you to build a great school. 

But if great schools need great teachers, where do you find them?

And this is the big mistake most schools always seem to make. You can't find great teachers, you have to train them! And once you realize this shift from looking elsewhere to focusing on building your current teachers up - that's when your school goes from average to great.

The fastest way to ruin a school's learning environment is to put a bad leader in charge of it. And that's because bad leaders make bad decisions and all of those bad decisions usually create a toxic learning environment.

Therefore, if you really want to build a great school, then you must put a great leader at the top to run it. But where do you find these great leaders? After all, they don't seem to grow on trees.
